Petrified Wood Photo Pre-Check

Photograph a possible petrified-wood specimen to compare visible woody patterns and similar-looking rock textures. The tool records clues and uncertainty; it cannot confirm mineral replacement, age or value from a photo.

Visible clues the tool compares

  • Ring-like patterns when exposed
  • Grain-like lines and their continuity
  • Bark-like outer texture
  • Mineral-looking areas and non-wood lookalikes

Photograph the whole specimen and its patterns

Choose an overview that shows shape and texture. An already exposed end can show ring-like structures; a side can show grain-like lines. Use a scale and avoid enhancing colours or drawing over features in the original image.

Wood-like patterns need comparison

Layered rocks, weathering and other textures can suggest grain without being fossil wood. A useful output explains which patterns appear connected and which may be coincidental. It should name missing evidence rather than assign a fossil age.

Do not infer hidden physical properties

Weight, density, hardness and composition cannot be measured from a photograph. The tool must not treat a stone-like appearance as proof of petrification or identify an ancient tree species from a vague pattern.

Preserve the specimen for a qualified opinion

Do not break or scratch the object to reveal a new surface for this tool. Keep collection notes and ask a geological or palaeontological specialist when identification matters. No appraisal or fossil value is provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this identify the original tree species or fossil age?

Not reliably from an ordinary photo. The tool compares visible patterns and may suggest broader possibilities, but age, mineral composition and species need additional evidence.

What happens if the image is unclear?

The result should explain what is missing and suggest a better view. A broad shortlist or an inconclusive result is appropriate when the photo cannot separate lookalikes.

Do I need to use a camera?

No. Choose an existing photo from your device. The tool uses the photo you select and does not require a live camera feed.

Is this photo check free?

A limited daily allowance is available through the web tool. The upload flow shows an allowance or limit message; this is separate from the mobile app.
